The emo theory - expanded

The following part was my reaction on an article that my friend Rachael posted in this article.
As it is litterally quoted, you might want to read that first for it to make sense.
So I'm too lazy to edit it into a more decent article, sue me :þ

"Hehe this is a good one

I have another definition of Emo's for ya:
"Emo's are people that slap themselves until they cry and write a song about it."

This appears to be painfully true, too..

And yeah, they think screaming makes their music heavy and hardcore (funny, in Holland, hardcore is something completely different...)

Online, emo's are quite easy to recognise:
-They put x's infront of and behind their names, or inbetween words (x_sadHellKittie_x, sadXloserXkid)
-Dark and unclear display pics with photo's of themselves, looking sad at weird angles
-They tend to pretend being vampires and such

Emo's are also the people that give goths a bad name, as many people outside either group or similar can't tell the difference.
Goths aren't usually cutters, that's the emo's, nor are goths sad and depressed all the time, that too is more an emo trait.

Emo's annoy me incredibly with their "Look at me, I'm so sad, I need attention, but don't actually come near me because I want to be sad and lonely so I can keep this attitude up" attitude.

They're creeps. Maybe we could get them all to move to Siberia where they can be as sad and lonely as they want and not bother anyone with it but eachother?

Whoa, big rant.."

Edit: Fixed the links, as apparently, their reference adress changed >_<>

  • but emos are sad.. and the thing is they enjoy it, which makes them just one big joke! Why do you think everybody laughs at them??

By Anonymous Rachael, at 12/13/2005 10:15 AM

  • And you, mr./miss anonymous, can't spell properly/apply proper grammar. (AOL kiddy?)
I'm also guessing you're an emo, judging from your reaction.
If you haven't got anything constructive to say, sod off.

And right you are Rach, right you are :)

By Anonymous Rachael, at 12/16/2005 11:22 AM

  • Your a dick head how could u go judging these sort of people u probably dont even no1...maybe they are sad for reasons..i recon u should shut the fuck up untill u actually meet and get to no a proper emo i bet u'll cahnge ur mind

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/27/2005 7:24 AM

  • My, aren't you an illiterate cusser =O

Seriously though. I know a few people that either claim to be emo's, or claim not to be, but are.
And don't you think you can be sad without being an emo? I know I'm not always the cheeriest and happiest of all and I get hurt, but I don't go on the whole "look at me, I'm so sad, I've been hurt and now I'm going to cut myself" trip, because it's just. So. Bloody. Stupid.
"I know I have my issues, and we know you have yours." ~Devin Townsend
Can't we keep it at that? Why is it some people need to cry for attention in such a sad way? It's a sorry sight.

The good news is that your reaction improved and that you have actually said something constructive. Please, do reply, but try using proper spelling and grammar. :)

By Blogger Methis, at 12/30/2005 8:55 PM

  • maybe there just using the expression emo as a way for yelling out for help...u might get depressed and down but everyday? i dont think so...there not different only thing is unlike alot of people they are able to express their feelings rather then botteling it up inside...i'm not expecting u to feel sorry for them or go out and become best friends but i think that u shouldnt make an negetive opinion about them untill you have given them a chance to prove that they arn't just sad people wanting attention. And i can't be bothered worrying bout spelling and grammar save that for school

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1/07/2006 6:15 AM

  • Im sorry but i must agree with Mr. Anonymous i have read the whole thing that you have been discussing and i think its quite discusting that you judge people in that way. Its just like it use to be back in tha day the 'White' people would look at the 'Black' people as rubbish at there feet at spit on them when they wernt any different. I no this case isnt the same but its along the lines, your judging the emo's by what you have either seen about then are heard about them. You cant be liked by everyone by its not fair you talk about emo's this way and yet you talk about goths like they are ok and emo's arnt. Well i guess everyone for there own, and we will never all agree........we are a race whom will destroy ourselfs what can i say.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1/11/2006 3:36 PM

  • Yes, if nature doesn't beat us to it, we will indeed destroy ourselves. So very true, the thought makes me smile. :)

Anyway, about the subject at hand:
I do actually like goths, I think they're beautiful people, the way they dress, save for the extremists covered all the spikes and shit, but also the people themselves. I know them to be really sweet and warm of heart (again, save for the posers), maybe this isn't everyone's experience, but that's how I know them.
I'm not a goth myself, alternative, but no goth, though again, I do admire them.
My experience with emo's is that they're whiney, jerky and personally, I don't like their sense of fashion much, but that's my opinion.
I think I can see why you look at me like I'm some kind of racist, however I can't say this is really justified.
I just give my opinion about emo's, which is my right to do (No, I'm not American, "just" a human). I don't act it out on them, I ignore them, most of the time, pretty much the same thing for most people that I don't feel inclined to get to know.
I guess I just kinda have a thing against people in general, some just a bit more than others. I wouldn't believe you if you claimed you embrace everyone into your life with open arms.
Also, how is it not fair to talk about them this way? In fact, things that are considered to be "unfair", are usually true. Not always, and not good, maybe, but true.
Anyway, you can condemn me for thinking this/saying this/expressing my opinion about emo's, but that does nothing but make you hypocrit.
Yes, calling me disgusting for calling emo's wankers IS very hypocrit.

One last thing: I think proper spelling and grammar just show some decency. It's hard to take anyone serious if their (ab)use of language is just to laugh at.

By Blogger Methis, at 1/11/2006 6:27 PM

  • wow alot has happened since i was last looking at this, i have read everything you annoymouse people have wrote and all methis has aswell, but er, i think something is being missed, mainly the whole point of why emos are considered annoying and sad.

It's all very well that you are depressed, and thats ok, everyone gets it, and im not 'judging' emos for being depressed- thats not it at all, IM judging them because if you just look at the whole emo thing its bassically turned into one fucking fashion. You do not have to prance around in tightened trousers, come your hair over 3/4 of your face to draw attention to yourself, if you wanna be an attentin seeker you can cry out in other ways.. but gawd.. dont make a whole fashion aobut it! Because now we have lots of people thinking 'ooo.. emo'.. yeah emotion.. wow thats so arty.. i get emotional, lets dress like this so everyone knows im one of those depressed people who like to express themselves'..

YOU DONT HAVE TO DRESS LIKE A TART TO BE EMOTIONAL!

Its like emotion and depression has become a fashion.. and turning something that comes naturally to humans into some fashion protest is the most stupidest and sadest thing i have ever seen.

and for your information i know plenty of emos, half of them i know very well, so dont you dare try and question wheather i know what im talking about or not!

By Anonymous Rachael, at 1/11/2006 6:43 PM

  • I really don't like those emo people... they think that being depressed is cool and that isn't cool... If you are depressed you aren't happy and not being happy and wanting to be sad just to be cool is the sadest thing i ever heard!!! Com on... Life is short so use the 80/90 years that you have good and don't be a depressed plant that's yelling for attention! And BTW, cutting in your self hurts it won't make you happy and stuff. And Anonymous i know for sure you are some depressed emo that want's to get Methis and Rachael to the depressed emo side of the world!!!

By Anonymous Ness, at 1/11/2006 7:04 PM

  • hehe "come to the darrrrk siiide... myyyyyy preeecioussss..."

By Anonymous Rachael, at 1/11/2006 7:10 PM

  • Actually, auto-mutilation does help.. it causes your brain to release painkiller chemicals, that, as the name suggests, kill the pain and work as anti-depressants.
It's a drug, basically, and people get addicted to it, which sucks.

By Blogger Methis, at 1/11/2006 7:11 PM

  • But cutting your self hurts... Maybe you release your 'depression' but then you have an other new 'depression' 'cause you hurted youre self and i think that's their idea of cutting their selfs.. To get sad again... *sooo sad*

By Anonymous Ness, at 1/11/2006 7:17 PM

  • Cutting your self (or self mutilation) is simply sickness it's combined with a depression and self low esteem. It has name too "Borderline" and it does not have nothing to do with lifestyle or fashion. Read more about "Borderline Personality Disorder" http://www.palace.net/~llama/psych/bpd.html

By Anonymous Boris, at 1/12/2006 6:57 PM

  • but why do emos try to make it into a fashion?
they all dress the same and then its like crucial for them to be depressed- i dont understand that most people who are now emos now start to do this to feel they have to live up to their name and reputation of being an emo kid >_<

By Anonymous Rachael, at 1/13/2006 3:40 PM

  • I'm sick of this bullshit...rachel why do u wear what u wear? oh maybe because u like ur style...well maybe emo's like that style aswell and take a look down the street next time u go out you'll notice that most people wear the same thing because according to the magazines thats the fashion and everyone wants to be in with the fashion...and emo's become emo's over time they dont just decided one day i'm going to be depressed therfore i'm an emo...and Boris you wonder why they cut but as u said urself low self-esteem and it's people like you who make them feel that way by saying the shit you did...and Ness cutting themselves is a realise and it would hurt for a while but thats what they need...they wouldnt get sad agian because they cut they dont give a fuck thats why the dont stop after one...and what the fuck i mean who chooses to get depressed...NO FUCKING ONE...it just happens...unlike u they might not have the perfect lives in fact one thing that contributes to that is fucking snobs like urself bagging them out because there different to you...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1/14/2006 5:59 AM

  • Methis it's me again......the one who said that we will destroy ourselvs. Please dont pick on my spelling and grammer i tend to forget commas and things and i cant spelt for peanuts!! i must agree with what you said aswell its not fair for me too critasize you for not liking emo's because thats what you are doing so i would just be doing the same and i wont say i have greeted everyone with open arms as you said but i do give people a fair chance and if of corse they do something other then as you say 'dress in a way which you think screams out for attention' then i wont have a problem with people......except the people who bommed the twin towers and that other place in bali........i really dis-like them people but they are already dead so i guess they wont do it again. but as i said before everyone for there own just because i dont have a problem with emo's doesnt means everyone has to get along with them but i do think (giving my opping, this is what im writing for) that it is mean branding all emos as attention seaking people isnt rite, ok so there might be people out there who only dress like it and have no probloms what so ever but still try to fish for the attention, but what about the people who are really genually emo's. I aceally found out that emo started as a type of music like rap or RnB but i guess you could say all those 'gangsters' are the same dressing in that way they do and doing drugs, which is as much good as cutting your self. please do respond methis i find reading your oppinions is quite interesting as you have quite a strong responce which is nearly always correct.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1/14/2006 6:15 AM

  • To anonymous #1:
First of all, I dress the way I do because I just feel comfortable in these clothes. I also stand out from the crowd in them, as there's few people who dress much like me. I am NOT the center of attention, nor do I wish to be, in fact, I really hate it.
Secondly, I know what auto-mutilation does and what it can mean to someone. A few of my closest friends have done (maybe still do, occasionally?) it, I've read some about it and what not, and I don't judge people for it.
Thirdly, I'm not some self-obsessed snob, unlike what you seem to think. I have issues, quite a few, some worse than others, but unlike emo's, I don't focus all my attention on them and get all depressed over it. Sure, I have my "less than happy" periods, but I care so much more for my friends. I look after them, do my best to make them feel better, care for them if they get sick, love them, just to make life that much easier on them, even if it's just a little. I'm not saying I'm the perfect friend, not at all. I make mistakes, I occasionally fall out a bit. Sometimes, I can't take it anymore and just start telling all my shit to whoever is unfortunate enough to be close enough to talking to me, which usually makes me feel a lot better, I have to admit.. But yeah, I sometimes bother my friends with my problems, even if they're insignificant, which I often don't really realise until afterwards.
My point is, I'm not the perfect friend, but I try to be the best I can, instead of focus on how shitty everything is. No, I do not just ignore all the shit in (my) life, I just don't put all my energy into it and feel misserable over it all the bloody time.

    To anonymous #2:
Spelling excused. It's just that I prefer that people who can spell (not dyslexic or having English as non-first language and just not properly learned it), actually use this, rather than using AOL language, so to say.
It's good that you give everyone a fair chance, I do, too, in most cases, however I'm often not to be expected into initiating contact. I'm just a bit of what you could call a people-hater. I simply just don't like people. Don't ask me why, maybe it's just their general arrogance, or their behaviour, I couldn't tell you and be sure. I should add that I don't think myself superior a lot, thought it changes a bit from day to day. Sometimes, I must admit, I just can't help but feel better than (most) others. Often, I don't think myself any better or less than anyone else, with a few exceptions, and of course, I occasionally feel like a freaking idiot, a wrong, an error.
I usually feel like I'm different, though. Not better or less than others, just different. And I don't mean that in the "I'm unique, just like everyone else" kind of way. I don't know how exactly, just that I genuinely feel like I'm differnt somehow. Of course, this could be discarded as your every day teen cliché, I'm not the one to judge.
"You said you're not some self-obsessed snob, so why all this rubbish about yourself?" you might ask, well, that's simple: I'm just trying to give you an idea of who I am so that you have a bit of a clue who it is you're discussing with. It may also clear up the motivation behind some of my given opinions a bit.
    Anyway, back to the subject:
I loathe the whole 'gangsta' scene. Not per definition all the people involved, but I think the scene's really fucked. It's some serious shit. This was confirmed not too long ago when a bunch of "gansta's" decided to beat up one of my friends, under the assumption he was a goth, which he's not, not even close: he's a sort of punker, but without the spikes, the crazy hair and the leather. So.. I think that shows just how superficial your average "gangsta" is.
Anyway, drifting off topic again.. I think see the link you saw between cutting and the drug (ab)use in the "gangsta" scene: They're both escapism, directing the mind away from the problem, they're both a psychological and physical problems, the addiction to the drug, the rush, and the need to hide the signs, as society doesn't usually treat users (or cutters, for that matter) very well.
I'm a bit undecided on whether it's a good comparison, though. It appears to be good, as the cause and effect are very similar, yet it feels wrong, but I can't really put my finger on it..
As for the musical origin, this happens a lot. Ever notice how fashion appears to come forth from and differ per musical genre? You can often tell what sort of music people listen to by looking at how they look, what they wear. I can tell a lot more from people by how they look (not only fashion-wise, but also how faces look, marked by life, gives away so much.. more than I'd like, sometimes), but I'm not sure whether this is something most people do well or that it's more of a personal quality, though from the people around me, I kind of get the idea it's the latter. I personally don't like the Emo music genre much, I think it's rubbish, probably with a few exceptions, but I wouldn't know like which.
Back to "fashion". The way I dress probably has a lot to do with what i listen to, but unlike what I see happening a lot, I tend not to specifically "dress to one genre", if you get what I mean. I have the long metalhead sorta hair, but my clothing varies from black, vaguely goth, to bright red and/or green, to skater, even to vaguely hippie, to I-have-no-idea-what-to-call-it, to grunger and every combination (that looks more or less decent..) and it's that what I don't often see, at least not around here.
(More insights on who I am, whooooo..! I just don't want to be seen as someone I'm not, I guess)

That's about all I should be writing for today. Sorry if it all seems to be a bit of an incoherent story. Blame that on last nights party (Basically meaning I haven't slept much. It also explains the frequent topic drifts).

  • Methis isn't my real name, actually :þ
It's something that came forth of trying to think of how my third name would be pronounced in English (Methis is fairly accurate, actually) and it has a bit of meaning, too: Me = this, this = Me. This, what it is you see of me, is who I am.
My real name's Abe, which is Dutch. The third name Methis was derived from is Mathijs, also Dutch :þ

Sorry to hear about your dad, btw. Can't really imagine what it's like not to have a father :/

I am doing a topic on emo's and theres so many opinions. i think people are a little bit to harsh on them when most people havnt even met one. they assume they cut themselves and sit in the corner of their room room crying for attention when actually emo has become a fashion. I did a survey and i asked people what they thought of emo's most people gave a negative comment isnt this what people accuse emos of doing seeing the negitive in everthing theyre only seeing the negitive in emos and not seeing the postive side they may have... thanx
